Septarian nodules are formed when clay, sediment, and organic matter become trapped in cracks in the earth. Over time, the minerals calcite, aragonite, and limestone precipitate and harden, forming the beautiful and unique septarian we see today. This particular nodule has been carved to resemble a hedgehog.
